At Ethical Pixels, we love good causes and try to support them whenever we can. Not to mention the Gilbert & Sullithon is certainly one of the most interesting (and intense!) charity endeavours we’ve ever come across.
The Gilbert & Sullithon is a marathon performance of all 13 Gilbert & Sullivan operettas to raise money for great charities such as Shelterbox, the Alzheimer’s Society, Harvey and the Brave Little Soldiers and Purple 4 Polio via The Rotary Club Of Birmingham’s Charitable Fund.
The event takes place over approximately 21 hours, with operettas running back-to-back (with an all-important 10-minute break between each) and aims to include 250 participants, including singers from sopranos to bass (and everything in-between) to conductors and musicians.
We first became aware of the Sullithon through our friend Richard Frazer from Business over Breakfast. He mentioned to us that the ex-Mayoress of Birmingham, Vivienne Wilkes, was looking to create a website to promote this unique idea. It was through this conversation that we met Philip Lovell, the Sullithon Chairman.
Phil explained to us the need for the site to take registrations, coordinate volunteers and display the timetable of operettas and complex logistics necessary to put on an event of this magnitude.
We approached this in our typical manner, creating a responsive mobile framework that could cater for users on different devices and showcase the complex tables of information necessary in an easily digestible way.
One particularly complex aspect in the past had been handling registrations when so many different types of people could be involved. Musicians, conductors and singers could be involved, each with different skills and ranges, and familiar with different operettas. This had required long paper forms, only a portion of which applied to any one person.
To ensure that users only saw the most relevant information on the Sullithon website, we programmed a form that relies on conditional logic to only ask the pertinent questions and hide everything else, making it quicker, easier and less confusing for people to register.
Ethical Pixels also provided domain registration, web and email hosting for the Sullithon, unifying the digital aspects of the operation under one roof.
